Artist Statement
Everybody experiences life in their own way, but through art we can seek to communicate the unspeakable. What I seek to share in my paintings is a view of the world transformed through line and colour. I am a visual storyteller and I use images as a visual vocabulary to tell both internal and external stories.
About
Carmela Casuccio was born in the United States, but has lived most of her life in Canada. Over the years, she has studied with many teachers, but is mainly a self-taught experimental abstract artist. Her influences range from the chiaroscuro techniques of Rembrandt and the late work of J.M.W. Turner to the American Abstract Expressionists. Carmela’s goal has always been to create works of art that are original and true to her inner vision. She has successfully created a body of work that shows a world of her own making.
Acrylic is her favoured medium and her paintings range from intricately designed smooth canvases to heavily textured and 3 dimensional sculptural paintings with layered watercolour paper on canvas or board. Carmela’s subject matter includes abstract cities explored intimately or from a distance. Her vibrant land and seascapes are unique visions of the world as experienced through her travels and imagination. Her non-objective works are mystery places to discover. Carmela’s paintings always cause the viewer to pause and reflect on the image, feeling it is familiar although it exists nowhere else. Collectors of her work often contact her years after their purchase to tell her of the joy they feel every time they look at her painting. It gives her much satisfaction to know that the joy she felt in creating her work is still being communicated.
Carmela has exhibited her work widely in Toronto galleries and juried art shows and also in selected galleries in the United States and Europe. Her paintings can be found in private and corporate collections internationally.
Carmela’s work is equally at home in both corporate and residential settings, from Board Rooms to bedrooms. She sells from her website, accepts commissions and is happy to work with designers and home stagers.
